I enjoyed seeing Gallery 7's production of The Giver. They used almost all grey costuming. Colour for the apple, a little bit of red lighting for moments of Jonas Seeing Beyond, and the memories (projected on screens at the back of the stage). They had Rosemary come on in the Giver's room as he remembered her, silent, and then moments from the end, placing the sled in the snow.

With my Fic Corner and Jukebox Fest assignments safely submited, I felt I could polish up a teeny Twelfth Night piece.

Where Viola had found her proper women's clothes Antonio knew not. It might have been moments or an hour that she was gone from the chattering crowd. Antonio had significant attentiveness only for Sebastian.

Inspired by the production I saw at Bard on the Beach, though that had Viola in a pink dress at the end.

Unrelated to the above, I landed on a romance author Tessa Dare's 2008 blog post "My FanFic Confessions - Yes, Tessa has yet another pen name!", linking to her Jane Austen fan fiction, so her name was fresh in my mind in a bookstore today. I picked up her Any Duchess Will Do as it looked fun.

General things

I like worldbuilding, and all sorts of character relationships (families and networks of many, many kinds). I prefer reading stories where alternate universes and strange concepts take themselves seriously (as opposed to surrealism or meta humour).

The present of a story in any of these worlds is a wonderful thing, and what an author feels comfortable or drawn to writing is the most important factor!

Thank you so much.

The recent production of Blood Brothers (done by the Arts Club) was incredibly well done.

I saw in the program that the Narrator was John Mann, the lead singer of Spirit of the West. He was unbelievably good, reaching for Mrs Johnstone and there in the crowds and the voice!

The stage set and how it was used was really good, an arch behind, levels, a ladder that became a library ladder and moved, a spiraling staircase railing... I thought the smoke would be for the first scene as a tableau, but I guess it was representing Liverpool smog all through.

Glorious staging of "Take A Letter Miss Jones", the line of people going on with Mickey and Linda's wedding in the background.

I didn't like Linda and Eddie seriously kissing in Light Romance, but that they sat (at the front of the stage) him holding her comfortingly, and up on the iron rail behind them Mickey and the Narrator sat, looking down.

Today I got a whole book of the Blood Brothers music! I hadn't even known such a thing was published, and had just been systematically flipping through the musicals and film section in the music store we were in.

General thoughts

All of these are works where I'm fascinated by the universe and whole story, so wherever inspiration takes you in terms of time and character focus. I particularly enjoy themes of making family and interpersonal bonds, whether that's pairs (any gender and species combination) or confusions or networks, innocently or implied not so innocent.

As You Like It at Bard on the Beach this year was a fabulous performance. Great acting, really neat costumes and staging (as always). I particularly liked the stylized trees, with poems folded into flowers on them.

"There is a man haunts the forest that abuses our young plants with carving 'Rosalind' on their barks; hangs odes upon hawthorns and elegies on brambles; all, forsooth, deifying the name of Rosalind." (As You Like It)
