Dog covers

katherine: You have been chosen to ride the Kingdom Chums' Love Light text against blurry rainbow colours (rainbowy)
There exists a whole series of Harlequins (Love Inspired Suspense, too bad for my reading preferences) with nothing but dogs on the covers: Rookie K-9 Unit.

My favourite is either Honor and Defend (there's puppies!) or Rookie K-9 Unit Christmas.
katherine: The Alot (a shaggy brown beast) wearing a santa hat. Words: I LIKE YULETIDE ALOT (yuletide)
I liked the commercial with sleep and wake animals that got nominated as a Yuletide fandom this year. (The internet supplies a video of a dog watching the commercial.)

My Yuletide assignment:
Just Can't Fall Asleep (1434 words)
Fandom: Belsomra "Cats and Dogs" Commercial
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Josephine didn't really think the butter would do much to distract Sleep from exploring and hiding, but it was worth a try. And it felt, a little, like involving Sleep in the move.

I got to thinking about the sleep and wake animals in other settings, and thus:
Motives (932 words)
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Belsomra "Cats and Dogs" Commercial
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Data & Ishara Yar
Characters: Data, Ishara Yar, Spot
Additional Tags: Wake and sleep animals, Set during "Legacy"
In a universe where the majority of humans have wake and sleep animals, Data meets Ishara Yar.

Shifter concept

katherine: Cat-eared Dreamsheep, sleeping against a pale green background (catdreamsheep)
Idea that came to me: I would love to read a story about a sheepdog shapeshifter whose human job is tour guide.

Repeated

I enjoy Janice Kay Johnson's novels a lot, but happening to read both of these Superromances by her within a short time period and finding this mental image repeated...

From No Matter What by Janice Kay Johnson (October 2012). The boy is 17 years old.
"Yes! I understand! Are you happy?" He hated the tremor in his voice. The little boy in awe of his daddy. The wriggling, squirming need to piss on the floor because daddy was mad at him.

From All That Remains, published a year earlier (October 2011).
She nodded, thinking that if she'd been a puppy her tail would be whipping and she'd be piddling on the floor in relief and pleasure because he wanted her help, because he was smiling at her. And that made her mad at herself.

Pride with a puppy

Pride was fun, as always.

The spot Graham and I got to watch the Parade turned out to be right next to a BC Guide Dogs puppy. Cute black Lab who was impressively ignoring all the noise and action, being focused on a large stick she got to chew on. Her owner said she got to do what she wanted and not be wriggly.

Black puppy wearing a blue BC Guide Dogs jacket with a rainbow flag draped over the side. She is nosing at a large stick on the ground while surrounded by many standing humans.

Seated black puppy, tongue out, wearing a blue BC Guide Dogs jacket with a rainbow flag. Background is grass and grey wall.

Dogs and stories

"Handler or Mom", a great piece from L-Squared.Org, part of the Assistance Dog Blog Carnival.

Meanwhile I finally found the portion of the Sesame Street episode about Brandeis who becomes a service dog. So I can watch that through (repeatedly) and finally finish the story I've had mostly written for many months.

I do very much prefer writing based on books: the convenience of a source I can pull from my own bookshelves or the library.

Soon to come: my letter for The Exchange at Fic Corner [community profile] fic_corner.

Chocolate Labradors

katherine: A line of books on a shelf, in greens and browns (books)
I dreamt I was building a wall (with a sliding door, rocks, and boxes of paper) to keep a chocolate labrador out of somewhere.

The dog's easy to source, since I was reading Sheila Hocken's Emma and I last thing before bedtime.

Sight of a Stranger

I'm reading Sight of a Stranger, a 1981 Harlequin I picked up. It's set on Vancouver Island, at least so far.

In chapter three, the hero says, "I've put your name on the waiting list for a guide dog."

Of course now I'm looking up dates. Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind was founded in 1984. Perhaps there was somewhere in Canada prior to that? Or the hero will fund travel out of province?

("British Columbia Guide Dog Services was incorporated as a registered charity on June 28, 1996, becoming British Columbia’s first guide dog school".)

Something tells me the heroine's vision will be miraculously restored so where she travels to acquire a guide dog won't be a plot point.

Puppy

I was very patient and got to pet a puppy.

A party I was at a guest brought a labrador puppy in training (through PADS). I kept the etiquette in mind and did not pay attention to him. His person thanked me for that.

Later, when there were fewer people in the room, the puppy got the command "Release", and after asking to be sure I got to pet him and tell him he's a handsome dog in training I get to pay attention to right now.

Puppy!
