A friend had a birthday gathering tonight, and had requested guests bring their favourite poems, to read aloud.

The birthday girl read verses from Morning Song of Senlin.

I brought some lines by William Cowper.

Graham wasn't sure about the grimness of Yeats' "The Second Coming", but lovely to hear.

I could listen to all of Eliot's "Portrait of a Lady" again.

Thanks to [profile] van_champion hosting the first in a series of viewings (leading up to going to a theatre for Serenity next month) I've now seen the pilot and following three episodes of Firefly. I am distinctly impressed by the characters, the look of Firefly itself (the ship and the overall show both), hints of the universe, and of course the banter (but then, it's a show by Joss Whedon, so of course). I freely admit, the themesong is really growing on me.

On a humorous note, while divying things out on the kitchen table, I asked Ryan if I could use a particular plastic fork, and I clearly heard him answer with, "It's Christine."

"You named the fork?" I asked, incredulous.

He insists he said "It's pristine," but Lexi seconded hearing what I had.

Furmeet with fruit

Furmeets are busy, loud events, which is really the main reason why I don't end up going to many these days. But I really enjoyed yesterday's, hosted by [profile] bogglerat. About my only objection to the space ("too small" being the fact of any location) is there only being one couch, and it's more difficult to snuggle people on a chair. Thankfully I'm lap-sized, and Graham's not the only one used to me making myself at home.

I missed a name or three in the crowd-noise, but I did try to get to know at least some of the new(ish) ones!

I finger-combed and braided someone's ponytail at length before he mentioned that he hardly ever let people touch his hair. Triumph.

As another success, I helped with the making of fruit salad. I melon-balled a Honeydew and half a Watermelon, getting the pieces more consistently round as I went on. So that was fun as well.

Chocolate

Today was the usual monthly furmeet, this time hosted by Marzipan and thus involving a great gathering in the food court. [livejournal.com profile] sithero shared his ice cream cone with me, and this inspired me to meander over to the little Death By Chocolate. I was captivated by the $2.50 chocolate peanut butter bar, at which point I realised that I had only a few nickels in cash, and I didn't really want to use my debit card on such a small amount.

So I went back to the big table of people and made eyes at Graham for money. He didn't have much change either. A joke was made about a collection for chocolate, and next thing I knew there were loonies and quarters and pennies from various people being stacked on the table in front of me, and I had such a fit of the giggles that I turned bright red and was laughing so hard I was running out of breath.

Ryan, with his usual chivalry, swooped in and got me the bar. It was very tasty.

FRED Trivia

I dropped in on FRED tonight. Thanks to a relatively small number of people being there, and a plethora of Harry Potter questions, I actually won the trivia contest—much to my pleased surprise! I'm not sure that I pronounced occlumency correctly, but I did remember the term.

My prize: Three V comics from 1985... I'm vaguely aware of the series. I've seen a few books (novelizations, maybe?) around, and at least one had A. C. Crispin's name on the spine, which I took as a recommendation.

Gathering

I made my way to Richmond and joined another little gathering that [profile] fruvous had organised. At one point, suggestions were taken for a webcam to watch while listening to random music, and lo, soon there were naked mole rats on the screen.

Weekend

Even with having a cold, I really did enjoy the weekend. The major thing was getting to see [livejournal.com profile] shaterri for the first time since Conifur. Had him all to myself before the furmeet, which I enjoyed. It is always nice to get some one-on-one time with a friend. Even if he did lead me into this Asian supermarket in Metrotown and thus cause me to be disturbed by corn and cheese icecream. And dried snails.

I still smelled of Lush and had glitter on my fingers at the 'meet. Not such a bad thing.
