This one is due to re-watching John Lewis Christmas Advert 2013 - The Bear & The Hare today.

Characters: Bolt - Character, Mittens, Rhino

Bolt cocked his head, not understanding Mittens' statement.

"I can't have kittens," Mittens repeated. "They cut that out of me too."

"Oh," Bolt said, ears drooping.

With my Fic Corner and Jukebox Fest assignments safely submited, I felt I could polish up a teeny Twelfth Night piece.

These Two Creatures (90 words) by Katherine
Fandom: Twelfth Night - William Shakespeare

Relationships: Antonio/Sebastian
Characters: Antonio (Twelfth Night)
Where Viola had found her proper women's clothes Antonio knew not. It might have been moments or an hour that she was gone from the chattering crowd. Antonio had significant attentiveness only for Sebastian.

Inspired by the production I saw at Bard on the Beach, though that had Viola in a pink dress at the end.

Unrelated to the above, I landed on a romance author Tessa Dare's 2008 blog post "My FanFic Confessions - Yes, Tessa has yet another pen name!", linking to her Jane Austen fan fiction, so her name was fresh in my mind in a bookstore today. I picked up her Any Duchess Will Do as it looked fun.

I think up until now an advertisement was the most unusual source of inspiration for a fic that I had.

Then I found a SkyMall product page for Service & Support Pet ID Kits includes two images of the same dog (a white "Labradoodle" in a Service Dog vest) apparently Photoshopped into two very different scenes, with utterly different humans.

katherine: The Alot (a shaggy brown beast) wearing a santa hat. Words: I LIKE YULETIDE ALOT (yuletide)
Among the stories I wrote for Yuletide are two pieces of The Giver fan fiction.

One character-focused:

Lily Remembering (1428 words) for puella_nerdii
Fandom: The Giver - Lois Lowry
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Lily (The Giver)
The morning Gabriel was to be released, Lily came to the table and saw only her mother there. "Your father went to his work early," Mother said.

"I don't get to wave bye to him. Or to Gabe," she said. "Or Jonas! What if they leave early tomorrow morning, and the next morning, and the next—"

Lily wanted to say that she felt angry.

One worldbuilding:

a mother too (320 words) for threeguesses
Fandom: The Giver - Lois Lowry
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
The Birthmothers are only a story the Community tells.

The concepts came up when I was discussing The Giver with my beta-reader in the process of writing the story that became "Lily Remembering", so in Yuletide Madness it was a joy to find threeguesses' request that mentioned worldbuilding and thus get to explore that set of ideas.

Of course I'm now toying with thoughts of how The Giver would work with daemons. Children in a dystopia with daemons felt sort of familiar... oh, right, I wrote a daemons piece for Matched some while back.
katherine: The Alot (a shaggy brown beast) wearing a santa hat. Words: I LIKE YULETIDE ALOT (yuletide)
The muse said, well yes Yuletide but nevermind that right now get up and write Harry Potter's daemon.

So I did.

A daemon taking the form of a dragon is hardly unusual in the wizarding world.

Applejack made do.

Pony/Sentinel fusion

katherine: Blue pen drawing of a whiskered fish with a small heart beside. Words: and be your catfish friend (catfish friend)
I have various bits of things lurking on the computer I'm travelling with (my cute XO).

This silly little piece is polished up from a draft I wrote six months ago.

A Reason (145 words)
Fandom: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Sentinel
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Scootaloo, Quills and Sofas storekeeper

Summary:

"There's a reason for my cutie mark," the pony she thought of as a storekeeper said.

Scootaloo frowned, wary of a trick. "Uh... because you sell quills and sofas?"

I'm not sure what to say about the stories I wrote for Yuletide (one assignment, one thousand-words-and-a-few treat, and two treats in Yuletide Madness) other than that I enjoyed writing them (excepting the usual this sucks and is it even a story stage) and am quite pleased with them.

The story recipients liked them which is awesome!

The No Archive Warnings Apply three:

Then today I posted another little Applejack/Fluttershy story: I Told You. Pinkie Pie was fun to write.

I enjoyed Matched quite a lot. (I'm a fan of novels about dystopias.) But I just finished the sequel Crossed, second in a trilogy I assume, and was deeply unimpressed. Alternating first person narration, changing each chapter, where I couldn't in the least distinguish the two characters? Really not good.

Ironically, this had me buffing the story draft I've had sitting for a few months, to get it finished and out there before I feel soured on the whole series.

A scene or three from Matched, with the addition of daemons:

Basi is on my shoulder as a starling, his white-speckled black feathers matching the night sky in my imagining of flight. That my daemon is in the form of a bird gives me the faint sensation of wings, matching my thoughts in another way.
